Call to worship

Those who sow with tears

will reap with songs of joy.

Those who go out weeping, carrying seed to sow,

will return with songs of joy,

carrying sheaves with them.

                                                                      From Psalm 126

THEME SONG:   I Have Seen the Golden Sunshine

I have seen the golden sunshine,

I have watched the flowers grow,

I have listened to the song birds

And there’s one thing now I know,

They were all put there for us to share

By someone so divine,

And if you’re a friend of Jesus, [Clap x 4]

You’re a friend of mine.

Chorus….

I’ve seen the light, I’ve seen the light,

And that’s why my heart sings.

I’ve known the joy, I’ve known the joy

That loving Jesus brings.

I have seen the morning sunshine,

I have heard the oceans roar,

I have seen the flowers of springtime,

And there’s one thing I am sure,

They were all put there for us to share

By someone so divine,

And if you’re a friend of Jesus, [Clap x 4]

You’re a friend of mine.

Chorus….

I’ve seen the light, I’ve seen the light,

And that’s why my heart sings.

I’ve known the joy, I’ve known the joy

That loving Jesus brings.

Bible Reading read  by Susan Young

Ruth 2: 1-9   P261 OT

HYMN:                 Born apart in different countries

two unlikely women meet;

famine brings their paths together,

kinship makes their bond complete.

Loss of loved ones draws them closer,

as they grieve and fight despair;

now the older, travelling homeward,

hears a loving voice declare:

‘Never say that I should leave you,

never bid me turn away:

now your people are my family,

and your home is where I stay.

From this day, your God I worship

till the day my life shall end.

Even death will never part us,

this I swear, my mother, friend.’

Loyal Ruth beside Naomi,

trusting God, they live each day,

sharing work and acts of kindness,

arm in arm they make their way.

In God’s time a joyful harvest,

fills their lives with hopefulness,

and we treasure still their story,

gentle tale of faithfulness.

Based on the Book of Ruth

First Talk

HYMN:       CH4 544 When I needed a neighbour

the children will leave to take part in their own activity

Second Talk

Responding Time

HYMN:       Build a longer table (Offering is presented)

Build a longer table, not a higher wall,

feeding those who hunger, making room for all.

Feasting together, stranger turns to friend,

Christ breaks walls to pieces; false divisions end.

Build a safer refuge, not a larger jail;

where the weak find shelter, mercy will not fail.

For any place where justice is denied,

Christ will breach the jail wall, freeing all inside.

Build a broader doorway, not a longer fence.

Love protects all people, sparing no expense.

When we embrace compassion more than fear,

Christ tears down our fences: all are welcome here.

When we lived as exiles, refugees abroad,

Christ became our doorway to the reign of God.

So must our tables welcome those who roam.

None can be excluded; all must find a home.
