Close Knit group

The Glasgow Close Knit Project was launched by the Church of Scotland’s Presbytery of Glasgow and homelessness charity the Lodging House Mission in 2024 as part of the Glasgow 850 commemorations, which mark the eight-and-a-half centuries since the city was awarded burgh status.

Cambuslang Parish Church took part in the project inviting anyone who could knit, to knit squares which would then be made into blankets. The response was overwhelming, and a group met once a month to complete 14 blankets which were displayed in the church and then with hundreds of others at the Briggait in Glasgow in 2025.

In 2025 we met from October- March and knitted a nativity scene that travelled to housebound parishioners during Advent and Christmas. We also gave crocheted knee blankets to a local nursing home.

The Close Knit Group is open to anyone in our community who enjoys craft of any kind. We also have a cup of tea/coffee and home baking when we meet.

The group has grown with people who attend church, their friends and neighbours. It was requested that in 2026-27 we meet from September to March. Everyone seems to look forward to a catch up once a month while they ‘craft’ and as they support each other through the highs and lows of life, solving knitting mistakes, or sharing skills. Some people just pop in for a chat. We meet in the Large Hall in the church and all are welcome. Our group endeavours to share the love of Jesus through being with one another and reaching out to our community using the skills which God has given us.
